England paceman Archer rested for ODI tri-series

Paceman Jofra Archer has been rested for England's one-day international tri-series in Pakistan later this month, with Jos Buttler also absent through injury.

England, on Thursday, named a 16-man squad for ODIs against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi and Lahore, with Buttler and batsman Jacob Bethell both sidelined.

But leg-spinner Adil Rashid is fit enough to return after a hand problem and all-rounder Sam Curran is back in the group after a groin issue.

Glamorgan leg-spinner Mason Crane, who is uncapped in ODIs, has earned a first international call-up in nearly nine years.

"The tri-series in Pakistan provides another valuable opportunity for our ODI squad to test themselves against quality opposition in different conditions," said selector Marcus North.

"Adil Rashid and Sam Curran return to the squad following their respective injuries while Jofra Archer has been rested to manage his workload following a busy summer."

In the series, which starts on October 18, teams play each other twice, with the top two advancing to the final.

England's limited-overs head coach Brendon McCullum had previously confirmed that wicketkeeper-batsman Buttler would miss the tri-series after suffering a hamstring injury in the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Last month, Buttler became the first England batsman to score 10,000 runs in international white-ball cricket, including both 50-over ODIs and T20 matches.

England ODI squad: Harry Brook (captain), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Josh Tongue
